Research Projects

2009-2010 school year in library- research!

6th Grade have focused on world cultures and their science project for Mr. Bradley.  They are now working on a cooperative research project about environmental/conservation organizations.  They are using a wiki to gather their information and write a persuasive essay as well as constructing a Powerpoint introduction.  Five non-profits involved in environmental/conservation are the research focus.

5th grade  will concentrate on biography in library, learning about famous historic persons, scientists, poets, and authors.  At mid-year, we are working on authors/poets using print and internet resources, finding quotes and making timelines.

4th graders will each research a state and learn more about regions of the United States.  At mid-year, we are starting the states’ projects with the final project to look like a license plate. Ask your fourth grader about strange place names from his or her state!

Welcome to the library web site!   Our school library is a busy place.  All students come to the library at least once a week, and sometimes more often to do research, return or check out books, use the library computers for word processing.

FAQ

How many books can LES students take out from the school library?

Pre-K students choose a book from a pre-selected group to keep in their classroom  for  one week.

K students choose 1 book from the picture book section and may take their books home  for one week after October.

1st and 2nd grade students may choose one book from non-fiction as well as  the picture book section, and they may take their books home for one week.

3rd-6th grade students may take two books out for a week.  There is a special section for 6th grade only that includes some YA (young adult) material for middle school aged students.

Occasionally, older students may take out extra books for a research project.  Most books can be renewed for two or three weeks as needed.

Overdue books: A goal for the library in 2009-10 is to reduce the number of overdue books at a given time.   My hope is to have no more than 5 overdue books in a class per week.   Students returning books on time saves computer paper and ink as well as classroom teacher time.  Many thanks to Lanesborough families for helping  our kids get organized with their library books!

A little about me:

I live in Lanesborough on a farm. Two of my three children attended Lanesborough School, and all 3 graduated from Mt. Greylock.  The students enjoy hearing about the farm animals, and again, this spring, we will incubate chicken eggs and hopefully get a good hatch.  Some spring lambs may make a visit to school as well.
